In the first non-political memorial in some years, the event at Point Lookout, NY was quietly presented as the mist and fog rolled in. This year’s presentation, now that the Town of Hempstead has placed a woman Democrat in the seat as Supervisor (first Dem in seat in over 100 years!) was non-political with politics still looming in the background.  It was very clear that in those that attended were not the Republican march and step show as it has been 16 years previously.

This morning as I got up early to get ready to head out, the rain that has been constant these past two days had stopped and I could hear the crickets singing away through the open windows.  And while the rain held off through the service at the beach, the overcast sky cast a somber mood on everyone this morning from attendees to presenters. And I realized as each presenter spoke, all touched upon the divisiveness that has taken this country since 17 years ago.  All introducing this statement without fanfare or anger as they wove it into their words to honor the dead.  All called for working towards unity.

After the service was over, and as it happened 17 years ago, many of those attending headed to the ocean. By then, the fog was settling down, cloaking all of us.  I love fog. It masks everything with a shroud of shared equal anonymity.

One could call this a sad dreary day.  But as I walked along the shore and through the mist, I spotted this pair. They lent the only bright colour spotted on the beach.
